Tobacco growers want compensation

The cigarette market, where sales have fallen over the past four years. The ratio of smokers has dropped to successive record lows for eight straight years, recently dropping to 30.3 percent, due to rising health consciousness, the aging society and tax hikes.
The company expects the market to shrink by 3 percent every year for the time being after the government last July hiked the tobacco tax again, by 0.82 yen per cigarette, taking the price of its top-selling Mild Seven brand to 270 yen per pack.
To pare costs, Japan Tobacco last September said it would shut down six factories by the end of March 2004, in addition to eight other factories already earmarked for closure. That will slash its number of domestic cigarettes factories to 11, down from 25 in 2002.
That total included 117.5 billion cigarettes smoking. "This study provides convincing evidence supporting the role of tobacco smoking as a risk factor for periodontal disease," said Krebs.
Before you light up that next cigarettes or take that next puff, remember it is going to cost quite a bit more. The Government is determined to discourage smoking, especially among the young.

The nation's largest cigarettes maker is disputing a study by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health that found nicotine in cigarettes has risen about 10 percent in the past six years.
